London 2012 Olympics First to be "Car Free"

Olympic Zone The Olympic Zone, seven minutes from central London by train, is approximately 2 km² and will contain: The Olympic Stadium, with a capacity of 80,000 will host the opening and closing ceremonies and all of the track and field events. The Aquatics Centre, which will host diving, swimming, synchronised swimming and water polo. The spectator capacity will be 17,500 The London Velopark, which has a 6,000 seat indoor velodrome for track cycling and a 6,000 seat outdoor BMX racing track. The Olympic Hockey Centre will host the hockey. with both 15,000 and 5,000 seat arenas, Two indoor arenas: Basketball Arena - 12,000 capacity for basketball and handball semi-finals and final Handball Arena - 6,000-7,000 capacity for handball prelims and quarter finals and modern pentathlon shooting and fencing The Olympic Village, with accommodation for all athletes and team officials (some 17,320 beds in total). After the games the village will become a district of the Stratford City development, a multi-billion pound development project on the former railway goods yard to the east of the Olympic Park. (Accredited technical officials — referees, umpires, etc. — will be housed in hotel space in London Docklands). The Olympic Press and Broadcast Centres. A tennis training centre. They are quite widely spread across central and West London: Wembley Stadium for the football finals The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club at Wimbledon for tennis. Lord's Cricket Ground for archery. Regent's Park for road cycling. Horse Guards Parade for beach volleyball. Hyde Park for the triathlon. Earls Court for the volleyball. The 2012 Olympic Marathon Course will circuit much of the Central Zone, starting at Tower Bridge, and finishing at the Olympic Stadium in the Olympic Zone. Outside Greater London Portland Harbour at Weymouth and the Portland National Sailing Academy will be hosting the sailing events Three other venues will be outside of Greater London: Broxbourne, Hertfordshire will be for canoe and kayak slalom Dorney Lake, Buckinghamshire, will be for rowing, canoe and kayak flatwater Mountain biking will be located at Hadleigh Country Park in Essex. The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, in Portland Harbour, Dorset on the south coast of England, will be used for the sailing events. It is around 120 miles from central London. Football stadiums The Millennium Stadium in Cardiff will host some of the football. Intellectual disability ban ends

Athletes with intellectual disabilities can once again take part in the Paralympics after an International Paralympic Committee (IPC) vote. They had been banned since it was found that most of Spain's intellectual disability basketball team at the 2000 Sydney Paralympics were not disabled. As a result, "sports intelligence" tests will form part of the new, more rigorous classification process. ParalympicsGB said it "welcomed" the decision taken on Saturday. Olympic committee settle legal battle over ticket sales

In an odd twist in the ongoing wars over ticket sales for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, Olympic organizers have settled a legal fight with a longtime unauthorized ticket seller — by giving that seller authorized tickets. The settlement, announced this week by officials with the Vancouver Organizing Committee (VANOC), ends a suit it filed last spring against Roadtrips, a Winnipeg, Manitoba, travel company that has sold luxury travel tours for 17 years. The agreement includes a mechanism for Roadtrips, which found itself in a previous legal tangle after failing to deliver tickets to clients for the Beijing 2008 Games, to stay in the Olympic travel business. Except now it will sell tickets provided by an authorized dealer, Jet Set Sports. The committee had accused Roadtrips of violating Olympic rules by selling tickets even though it wasn't an authorized dealer. BMW chosen to provide official Minis for LO 2012

The Mini, the iconic British car of the 1960s revived for the modern driver by the Germans, will transport athletes and officials around London during the 2012 Olympics under a �40 million deal agreed yesterday. BMW saloons will also be used for VIPs, sports chiefs and corporate guests after the German carmaker was chosen over Ford and Nissan as the official car sponsor of the London Games. While the elite will be driven between venues along specially reserved Olympic lanes, the general public will be expected to travel on public transport, by bicycle or on foot as part of a pledge by London organisers to stage a green Games. The 4,000 vehicles to be supplied by BMW will be standard rather than hybrid engines, although the company will showcase some electric vehicles on the Olympic Park and is providing a few hundred bicycles for use by competitors around the Athletes’ Village and by London 2012 staff. - www.timesonline.co.uk

GB trampoline on the up - Higgins

Britain's top male trampolinist reckons his sport can deliver a medal at London 2012 following a strong showing at the World Championships earlier this month. James Higgins, 25, came seventh in the men's individual final in Russia, the British champion's best result to date. "I would hope with my result and new blood in the team, this will be a springboard on to better things in the future," Higgins told BBC Sport. "I'm going for a medal, or a win, or whatever I can get at the Olympics." Higgins, from Northampton, has never previously come close to the performance he put in to finish seventh in St Petersburg. BMW becomes 2012 Olympics sponsor

Car manufacturer BMW has become the 24th sponsor for the 2012 London Olympic Games. It means a fleet of 4,000 vehicles including the Mini and BMW bicycles and motorcycles will be used by athletes, officials, and staff during the Games. It is also a sustainability partner which means it will have to meet a low carbon and healthy living challenges.
